After a long run, which included participation in German co-production markets, Mannheim Meeting Place and connecting cottbus, as well as being selected for Karlovy Vary’s Works in Progress’s section, Cypriot director and Berlinale Talents alumna Tonia Mishiali returns to Berlin to present her debut feature film, Pause, at the 2018 European Film Market.
The London-based world sales company Film Republic, which traditionally features a strong line-up of female directors, is handling sales and has confirmed that it will be launching a rough cut of Pause to buyers at EFM 2018. The market premiere is scheduled for 7.35pm on Monday 19 February at CinemaxX 16.
Pause tells the story of middle-aged Elpida (Stella Fyrogeni), tormented in a loveless marriage, she turns to her imagination to inflict violence on her husband, all while tackling her desire for the young painter next door.
In terms of the motivations behind her film, Tonia Mishiali, stated: “I have always been sensitive to women’s issues, while I have been particularly interested in exploring human relationships. Pause draws from personal experience and deals with the theme of decadent relationships in marriage, viewed through the prism of the complex and fascinating female nature, about the loss of one’s voice and the longing for love”.
Film Republic's Viktorija Cook shared her input: “It's a very timely film, dealing with the issues of domestic abuse, gender and age. This is a perfect film for this year, by a very talented female director, handling a delicate subject in a very stylish and well-humoured way”.
Pause is a co-production by Cyprus’s Seahorse Film Productions and Greece’s SOUL Productions. The exclusive teaser is courtesy of Film Republic and Seahorse Film Productions.
